Windows Update Shutdown Takes Too Long

If your computer is stuck on "Please do not power off or unplug computer..." "Installing update __ of __".

- Force a shut down by holding in your power button.
- Reboot to Safe Mode.
- "Run" (click Start and type msconfig in run or search box) msconfig to get to control menu where you can temporarily turn off all Non-Microsoft services. (you can check the box on the first tab to turn them off for you.) Apply (save).

Restart normally.

Then shut down again to install the pending updates. (shutdown will have a yellow shield on it)

This should help if you are running Windows 7 or Vista and have a slow, stuck, very long time or frozen shutdown update process.

- when complete (sometimes these updates happen in 2 or 3 shut downs) turn computer back and redo "msconfig" and turn on all services again (start normally / first button).

Windows 7 / Vista - Slow, Stuck, Long or Frozen Shutdown Update.
