FYI: News from Facebook (data use policy change notice August 2013)

FYI: - Facebook News.  Data use policy change and other proposed changes.

We got an interesting email from Facebook today.
At first this looks like a spam or phishing email. It's from the Chief Privacy Officer, but no return address, phone number or address for the corporation.
After checking the "from address" on the email and validating the info on the the Facebook corporate page I realized it wasn't spam.

News from Facebook
Hi J*******,
We're writing to let you know that we are proposing updates to our Data Use Policy and our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. These two documents tell you about how we collect and use data, and the rules that apply when you choose to use Facebook. Our goal with these updates is to make our practices more clear.
We update these documents from time to time to make sure we keep you posted about the latest things you can do with Facebook. This email describes the key changes we've proposed and directs you to places where you can learn more.
What's being updated and why?
Both documents have new language to help you better understand:

  • How advertising works on Facebook
  • What to expect when it comes to using your name, profile picture, content and personal info with ads or commercial content
  • How to control or remove apps you've used
  • What data you're sharing with mobile devices
Like always, we won't share the private information that you put on Facebook with advertisers without your permission.
What should you do and when will the updates happen?
You can review all the updates on our Site Governance page's Documents tab and over the next seven days leave comments on that page to give us feedback. Please take some time to read through everything and let us know what you think. If your comments lead to more updates, we'll post those on the Site Governance page, too.
To stay up to date on similar topics, please like our Site Governance and Privacy pages. And, if you want to learn more about how we show you interesting, relevant ads, or how cookies and similar technologies help us do so, please visit our Ads and Cookies pages. We hope you find these resources helpful.
Best regards,
Erin Egan
Chief Privacy Officer

Can't Upgrade Internet Explorer for XP?

Windows Internet Explorer for XP?

Do you get frequent reminders and demands to upgrade Internet Explorer.  From IE 8 to IE9.

The problem is that that Internet Explorer 8 is the highest version browser available for Windows XP.

IE9 and up require Windows Vista & up.

HOWTO: Clone Your Hard Drive

Clone means it is the exact same data, software and operating system.

It's usually used to install a bigger hard drive.  Or a bare metal emergency backup.

San Francisco Street Food Festival

San Francisco Street Food Festival 2013

Folsom Street - August 17, 2013

The passport is a great deal!!

FYI

The San Francisco Street Food Festival Is Almost Here!
Remember how amazing it was?  You know how great passports can be.  It's time to get a new one.
Just a year ago you set out with a mission: to eat amazing street food.  You were armed with the essentials: an appetite, some stretchy pants, and of course, your Street Food Festival passport.

Maybe it was the discounts, the games, the info section, the sponsor freebies, or maybe just the fact that you love well-designed souvenirs.  Maybe it was the fact that with the passport, you didn't need to carry cash, and that meant more room in your pockets for the good stuff: packaged food and giveaways.  Maybe it was the fact that you could share it with friends and family so that everyone could get in on the cash-free discounts.

Whatever it was, it awesome and you're ready to do it again.

In just 8 days (woah), La Cocina will be hosting the 5th Annual San Francisco Street Food Festival. Last year, CNN called this one of the world's best food events, SF Weekly called it the most important event in food for the Bay Area, and we call it awesome.

Join us for the big enchilada (or burger, or onigiri, or whatever - you choose really) on Saturday, August 17th! We've got 85 owner-operated vendors participating this year, each one trying to outcook the next.  We've got Michelin-starred chefs, James Beard award winners, and of course, bites from your favorite La Cocina entrepreneurs, food trucks, and Local Forager winners.  In between love-stuffed tamales from Alicia's Tamales and mouth-watering momos from Bini's Kitchen, check out the booths from State Bird Provisions, Charles Phan's Hard Water, Thomas McNaughton's Central Kitchen, and so much more.

Admission to the festival is free but to maximize your full eating potential, you can buy a passport to a) not worry about having cash, b) support La Cocina and c) get all the extra shwag (with an "H," thank you!) you're likely to want anyways. The best part?  Every year the discounts and the games get better and better.

But, you're a pro - you already knew that.
Yep.  Time to Order that Passport.
What's 'App-ening, San Francisco?!: Introducing the Street Food Festival App

You remember the lines, the countless options, the search for the next perfect bite.  We want to make it easier for you.

As we get closer to the festival, we know you're feeling overwhelmed by all the delicious epic food to be had (who wouldn't be??) but it's okay, we have the answer: The Street Food Festival App, now available in itunes.

Download it. See the full menu. Save your favorites. Get your passports. Share it with your friends. Plan your attack. Get hungry. See you soon.

With the app, you'll also have the opportunity to review food and based on ratings, decide who will be crowned "Most Delicious Vendor" or "Best Vendor."

Only craving Japanese?  Ethiopian? Dessert?  La Cocina vendors?  Not to worry.  We've got everything sorted out so you can find (and enjoy!) your food more easily! Download the app here!

Eat. Drink. Donate. Repeat.
