The setting in Yahoo Mail to "Automatically add new recipients to Contacts" is currently not available in Yahoo / AT&T Mail Classic.
The mandatory upgrade is coming in June 2013 so this should fix the situation but these are just my observations and I'm not sure.
This is screen shot of the Yahoo Mail Classic as of 5/2013. You will see that the check box to add contact automatically add email addresses is gone.

"No action is required by AT&T Yahoo! Small Business customers at this time. At the time of migration, you'll be asked to agree to a new Terms of Service, and you may be asked to take other steps, which may include but may not be limited to creating a Yahoo! ID to associate with your account. More details about the upcoming migration and what to expect will be communicated to you via email over the coming weeks.
If other changes are required, we will send communication to the owner AT&T Yahoo! ID on the account. Please note that we will continue to be your point of contact for any technical or billing issues."
